Since 1931, Avondale has been a trusted name in the communities of Niagara, Hamilton and Haldimand. What began as a small dairy operation and milk delivery service (Avondale Farms Dairy) has evolved into over 90 locally owned and operated convenience stores that are a testament to hard work, commitment, dedication and entrepreneurial spirit. When Harry W. Stewart began delivering milk from the family farm on Stewart Road in Niagara on the Lake, it was the beginning of a legacy of providing valued customer service for generations to come.
Avondale is constantly growing and evolving to meet the needs of our community and continue to bring the quality and customer service we are known for. Our products are continually reviewed and updated to keep our neighbours coming back. Avondale is more than a convenience store – we now carry prepared foods, general merchandise and clothing – Avondale truly is a one-stop-shop. From horse and buggy to milk trucks, dairy deliveries to convenience stores, we sincerely thank all our dedicated customers and loyal staff for helping to make Avondale a household name in our communities.
Harry W. Stewart began milk delivery to St. Catharines households from his family farm on Stewart Road. He constructed a small pasteurizing plant on his property, with deliveries made with one horse and wagon.
Frank W. Stewart started a second milk route, while the other Stewart children – Margery, Fred, Jim, Bob and Bill – worked in the plant and did farm chores when they weren’t in school.
Robert G. Stewart, former president of Avondale Stores Limited, started Avondale’s third milk route in the area.
